Origins:

The Estimates Committee in the Indian Parliament recommended the establishment of a Service Selection Commission in its 47th report (1967–68). The purpose was to conduct examinations for recruiting lower categories of posts.

On 4th November 1975, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms constituted a commission called the Subordinate Service Commission.

Later, on 26th September 1977, the Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

Functions and Evolution:

The SSC’s functions were redefined by the Government of India through the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions on 21st May 1999.

The new constitution and functions of the SSC came into effect from 1st June 1999.

Annually, the SSC conducts the Combined Graduate Level Examination, recruiting non-gazetted officers for various government jobs.
