• Origins:

  • The Estimates Committee in the Indian Parliament recommended the establishment of a Service Selection Commission in its 47th report (1967–68). The purpose was to conduct examinations for recruiting lower categories of posts.

  • On 4th November 1975, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms constituted a commission called the Subordinate Service Commission.

  • Later, on 26th September 1977, the Subordinate Services Commission was renamed as the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

• Functions and Evolution:

  • The SSC’s functions were redefined by the Government of India through the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions on 21st May 1999.

  • The new constitution and functions of the SSC came into effect from 1st June 1999.

  • Annually, the SSC conducts the Combined Graduate Level Examination, recruiting non-gazetted officers for various government jobs.
